台灣因為困窘的歷史背景，在國際上屢被中共打壓，也鮮少有國家願意為台灣出頭。而美國現任國務卿蓬佩奧（Mike Pompeo），可能是台灣民主化以來，對我們最友善的美國首席行政官員。蓬佩奧自 2018 年 4 月上任後，多次公開力挺台灣，上週六（9）更宣布解除美台交往限制，等同於卸任前送台最後的大禮。

2018 年：讚揚台灣可自由且公正地選舉
2018 年 11 月 24 日，台灣舉行九合一地方選舉綁公投，當天順利完成選舉、投票，蓬佩奧隔天便在推特上祝賀台灣成功舉行自由與公正的選舉，讚揚台灣的憲政民主是印太地區典範。

2020 年：祝賀小英連任、緬懷李登輝、強調台灣非中國的一部分
2020 年 1 月 12 日，總統蔡英文成功連任，蓬佩奧發表祝賀，讚揚台灣再次展現民主力量，並感謝蔡總統帶領台美建立強健夥伴關係。

2020 年 4 月 4 日，台灣宣布捐贈 200 萬片口罩給美國，美國國務院稱讚台灣是「真朋友」，雙方官員更開會討論擴大台灣國際參與。國務院亞太局也發出聲明表示，台灣是國際防疫領袖，應成為世界衛生大會觀察員。

2020 年 4 月 9 日，台灣宣布捐贈口罩後，蓬佩奧推文讚許台灣，表示台灣資訊透明且慷慨大方，是世界防疫模範生。

2020 年 5 月 2 日，美國國務院及駐聯合國代表團近日在推特發起 #TweetForTaiwan 運動，將台灣「推進」WHA。

2020 年 5 月 19 日，台灣未獲邀參與世界衛生大會，蓬佩奧表示，世衛秘書長有權邀請台灣，卻在中國壓力下選擇不這麼做，此舉不只讓世界無法聽取台灣防疫專業，也損害世衛公信力。

2020 年 7 月 31 日，前總統李登輝辭世，蓬佩奧發表聲明，緬懷李登輝終結台灣威權統治，帶來經濟繁榮與法治。並表示將加強台美合作關係，以緬懷李登輝的政治遺產。

2020 年 9 月 17 日，美國國務次卿柯拉克率團訪問台灣，是自 1979 年以來訪台層級最高的現任國務院官員。柯拉克與台灣討論如何強化經濟合作，並出席前總統李登輝的告別追思禮拜。
2020 年 9 月 24 日，蓬佩奧赴威斯康辛州參議會演說，指控中國施壓美國州政府不得承認或與台灣往來。蓬佩奧呼籲州政府應無視中共威脅，鼓勵政府官員及企業人士與世界各地來往。
2020 年 10 月 22 日，台灣駐斐濟代表處舉辦國慶酒會，中國外交人員擅闖酒會還打傷我國外交官員。蓬佩奧譴責中方作為，表示這並非中國外交官首次行為不當，並希望台灣友人能早日康復。
2020 年 11 月 13 日，蓬佩奧接受電台節目修伊特秀訪問表示，台灣非中國一部分，過去 35 年美國兩黨也承認這件事。蓬佩奧說，美國對台承諾跨越黨派，兩黨都了解台灣是民主典範。
2021 年：取消台美交往限制
2021 年 1 月 9 日，美國國務院宣布取消美台交往限制。蓬佩奧表示，美台兩民主政體共享自由、法治等價值觀。指出美台關係，不需要、也不應該因為官僚體制而受到束縛。
在蓬佩奧 2 年任期內，台美關係發展神速，甚至在川普卸任前的最後 11 天內，發佈取消美台交往限制的聲明。如今，美國兩大黨都支持深化台美關係，蓬佩奧及其主導的國務院無疑是關鍵。
