Cracks are appearing in Clarke’s building work
In the build-up to Euro 2020, Scotland’s players and management said that the objective was to change the nation’s mentality: rather than simply be happy with qualification for a major championship, they had to reach the next round. And they had to make a habit of it. Just a few weeks later, the bravado has been blunted. With the exception of their draw with England at...In the build-up to Euro 2020, Scotland’s players and management said that the objective was to...In the build-up to Euro 2020, Scotland’s players and management said that the objective was to...

On this day
In 1651, at the Battle of Worcester, a Royalist army under King Charles II was defeated by Commonwealth forces under Oliver Cromwell. The king escaped into exile in France; in 1658 Oliver Cromwell died, aged 59, from complications linked to a form of malaria and kidney stone disease. He appointed his son, Richard, as his successor as lord protector of the commonwealth of England, Scotland and Ireland; in 1752 Britain and its colonies replaced the Julian calendar (which had an inbuilt error) with the Gregorian, so that September 3 became September 14; in 1783 the Treaty of Paris was signed, by which Britain recognised the independence of the United States of America; in 1939 Britain and France declared war on Germany, after prime minister Neville Chamberlain announced that an 11.15 GMT deadline had passed for the withdrawal of German troops from Poland after their blitzkrieg offensive of September 1; in 1976 Nasa’s Viking II spacecraft touched down on Mars; in 2017 North Korea declared a “perfect success” in testing a hydrogen bomb, the nation’s sixth nuclear test, which caused a 6.3-magnitude tremor.
Nature notes
Curiosity might have killed the cat, but it doesn’t seem to harm the southern hawker dragonfly. The easiest way to identify this large insect is not so much by its vivid greens and blues, but by its inveterate inquisitiveness. Hawking along a woodland edge or through a garden, if a southern hawker happens to spot a human being it doesn’t vamoose like most dragonflies, but heads straight for them. Often it will hover directly in front of you for a few seconds as though demanding your credentials. Being eyeballed by such a large, colourful insect is a strange experience. Southern hawkers are on the wing, deep into autumn.
